The animals have to come home
The ceremonial driving down of cattle from the mountain patures into valley in autumn is a very special custom and a yearly recurring necessity. It’s the coming back of the cattle (cows, sheeps and goats) from the alpine pastures in the autumn back to the stable before the winter is coming. The time to come back for the cattle depends on region and weather conditions. In the Lungau this all usually happens around the 24th of September. It’s a type of thanksgiving of the farmers, in which the cattle is gratefully decorated with flowers.
